Two bets for today. Rasheeq takes to the stage at York and I'm interested to see how he'll perform over 6f having mainly campaigned at the minimum trip since joining Tim Easterby. On the face of it, his form is questionable with his two most recent spins being below-par but plenty went wrong last time and Pontefract is a specialist track anyway, so I'm happy to forgiven and forget. Running up a straight again is in his favour and his two runs at the track in May yielded a pair of excellent second place finishes. If he can return to that sort of level and stretch his stamina out to the sixth furlong, things could get interesting late on.
Withernsea looks a big price in the heritage handicap at Ascot and gets the nod despite a small army of the runners fitting into the "of interest" category. Richard Fahey's charge is of particular interest on his Newbury win a couple of months ago and probably wasn't best suited to fast ground in similarly competitive handicaps the last twice. He wasn't disgraced on either occasion, which bodes reasonably well, and a step forward on this (anticipated) slower surface would be far from a surprise. Gerald Mosse taking over in the saddle is no negative either and if a middle draw is favourable, I don't think the horse is a 25/1 poke.
2:40 - Rasheeq - 1pt @ 10/1 (General) - 3rd @ 8/1; ran well and stayed, but winner blitzed them all.
3:00 - Withernsea - 1pt @ 25/1 (General) - 3rd @ 22/1; great effort, thought he may win it 1f out...
